"What Kumar has confirmed is just what I said in past articles, that Zen wasn't tapeout still. The gap between tapeout and final product availability is of about one year. Assuming Zen is tapeout on February, this puts Zen release on Q1 2017.
Other issues with the article:
- The rumors of 14nm struggles at Globalfoundires, have not been debunked. In fact they have been confirmed with Apple canceling orders on Glofo and migrating production to TSMC.
- Athlon64 wasn't Keller design. Everyone seems to believe that K8 was Keller design, but wasn't. Keller worked in an initial prototype, that was canceled and the real K8 was made by other people at AMD. I wouldn't be surprised if the same happen with Zen, specially after Keller's abrupt departure. I.e., that his initial K12/Zen prototype was canceled and real Zen is Suzzane's team design.
- The 40% jump is not impressive. AMD is moving from a speed-demon design (low IPC) to a brainiac design (high IPC). Intel is moving from brainiac design to brainiac design.; thus the IPC increase per gen is smaller for Intel. Just check Zen+, it will be a performance jump similar to Intel."
