Opteron mot Xeon

Intressant recension

AMD var ju bra mycket snabbare i genomsnitt. Intel har ju ingen "serverprocessor"längre. Den är ju desktopprocessor nu. P4 3.2 EE är ju en Xeon i P4 förpackning. Tycker det är riktigt dåligt att göra så bara för att hänga med AMD i 32bit apps. Bara ett desperat försök! Dåligt Intel! Nästan fusk att ta en serverprocessor och "göra om" den till en desktop bara för att dom ligger i kris när det gäller prestanda för desktop.

Q2 2004 lanseras Nocona, Intels nya serverchip.

"Following the most recent conceptions of its products introduction, Intel will offer a lineup of new Xeon DP microprocessors at different price-points, not just one or two chips. The listing of SKUs will include Xeon 1M at 2.80GHz, 3.0GHz, 3.20GHz, 3.40GHz and 3.60GHz.

The new Xeon 1M “Nocona” processors will be different compared to current Xeon 1M CPUs from micro architectural points of view. Firstly, Nocona’s L1 cache is two times larger compared to the current Xeon DP processors’ and equals to 16KB. Secondly, Nocona includes 16K uOps Trace Cache, a substantial improvement over current 12K uOps. Thirdly, 90nm DP products will make use of Prescott’s new, more efficient branch prediction mechanism. Fourthly, the new Xeon 1M microprocessors will feature SSE3 technology. Finally, the new Intel Xeon 1M “Nocona” is very likely to boast with enhanced efficiency of the Hyper-Threading technology. Additionally, all Nocona Xeon 1M chips will have 800MHz Quad Pumped Bus. All-in-all, the new processors for 2-way servers and workstations will be quite substantially faster than current Xeon 1M products at the same speed bins."

H1 2006 lanseras AMD K9 , AMDs nästa generation processorer.

''The K9 core will initially be present in the Opteron 870, 868 and 866 CPUs. The K9 is expected to incorporate a number of new technologies including being based on a threaded architecture, chip level microprocessing and media/vector processing extensions The K9 core is expected to offer much higher performance than the K8 and is expected to operate around 10Ghz, with Ghz performance I/O, and contain huge caches.''

De har ju itanium ... den är ju rätt fet ... dessutom är ju FX-51 just en serverprocessor i dekstop format ... precis som P4 EE ... grejen är att AMD64 är en ny arkitektur och Netburst en flera år gammal med de för/nackdelar det medför .. den är ju beprövad och buggfixad fast man kan ju knappast vänst sig några prestanda ökningar genom optimeringar el dyl nu mera, hammer kommer öka sin prestanda med tiden, optimeringar och 64-bitars applikationer är ju under utveckling fast samtidigt finns vissa problem t.ex. med autocad enligt recensionen fast de kommer säkert lösa sig med nya drivtutiner/BIOSar...

Så löjligt att kalla Intel för desperata bara för att dom släpper EE, skulle dom skippat det helt och hållet och istället bli ätna till frukost av AMD?

Nja Thoroughbred --> Barton är bara en uppgradering, men skillnaden mellan K7 och K8 är relativt stor . K8 har bland annat integrerad minneskontroller (helt annan buss) och 64 bitars stöd. Sen så har den även en längre pipeline, stöd för SSE2 och en ny förpackning (SOI). Men visst finns det många likheter också.
