Ok, I now have a more detailed description of this strange downloading problem I have with my FreeBSD 5.4 server.
I've noticed some interresting details through lots of test-downloads and hopefully its enough to isolate the problem.
I'm using my BSD-machine as a server at home behind a router together with two XP-machines, running Samba and VNC.
I'm running Fluxbox through VNC on it, so I can browse the web and download files with web-browsers,
and this is where the problem comes in.
I can not download large files.
I have for example tried 4 times with "fear_mpdemo_en.zip" (462MB) from gamershell.com (ftp://download2.gamershell.com).
After 93-96% (different every time) it just stops. No errors, nothing in /var/log/messages, paus/cancel/retry doesn't help.
I've also tried a couple of files from fragzone.se (ftp://ftp.fz.se) with similar result.
It also seems to depend on downloading TIME and not MB.
If I have some other download going that slows it down, then it doesn't get as far into the file as it should have.
If I for example get 78% on a file, and then second try I cap my speed on that download to 70% then I get around 55% instead.
Only did two tests on this but it really seems to be time related.
Of course, if I try any of these files from my XP-machine it always works with no problem.
I have tried two different NIC's, a cheap Realtek and a Intel PRO/100+.
I have also tried two browsers. The 5.4-default shipped Mozilla, and newest Firefox.
I have also tried from KDE instead of Fluxbox.
I have also switched ports on the router (havent tested without the router though but dont think its needed either).
Now to the interresting part. I recently noticed it works from some sites!!!
For example downloading "kubuntu-5.04-install-i386.iso" (585MB) from http://se.releases.ubuntu.com worked.
Also downloading "SUSE-10.0-CD-i386-GM-CD1.iso" (685MB) from http://ftp.sunet.se works.
BUT, downloading "SUSE-10.0-CD-i386-GM-CD2.iso" (712MB) from ftp://ftp.sunet.se does NOT work.
You guys starting to see the pattern here?
It obviously seems the problem is I cant download from ftp's, that it for some reason times out after a certain time.
And what might be the solution then? Does anyone have a clue?
Haven't timed the downloads, but it seems it dies after approximately 2 hours, no matter how much I've got from the file.
Or well, actually I just timed a download and it stopped after 130 minutes.
Here is ifconfig for my current Intel-card (might switch back for the Realtek later since it seems to work as well).
fxp0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
options=8<VLAN_MTU>
inet6 fe80::203:47ff:fead:695f%fxp0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1
inet 192.168.0.2 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.0.255
ether 00:03:47:ad:69:5f
media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX <full-duplex>)
status: active
Would be very good to have this solved.
Most files are on ftp's and its a little sad having a server that cant grab larger files from ftp through the browser.
