GTX 970 Users Reporting Problems With 4GB VRAM Usage

There have been rumours trickling around for some time now that users are experiencing problems with Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 970 graphics cards when VRAM usage escalates above 3.5GB of its 4GB capacity. It appears that despite being advertised as a 4GB card, the GPU is in fact only capable of using a partial chunk of this.

A number of people have been noticing performance hitches with their GTX 970s but until now Nvidia hadn’t recognised it as an issue. At last though an Nvidia representative has said that it's looking into the problem and is hoping to update GTX 970 owners on the situation as soon as possible.

Users have seen the high-end GeForce GTX 970s come unstuck when gaming at higher settings, with monitoring VRAM benchmarking software indicating that when the last 500 or so MB of VRAM is accessed performance begins to absolutely tank. The quantity of useable GDDR5 memory on the GTX 970 also varies across the board, with some cards only capable of hitting 3GB VRAM usage.

Those who have been affected report memory bandwidth dropping from its 224GB/s norm, all the way down as low as 19.88GB/s, indicating that the graphics cards are in fact drawing on system memory.

The problem is reportedly widespread and affects all models of the GeForce GTX 970 to some degree, and Nvidia’s community liaison ManuelG is looking into the situation. Depending on whether it’s an issue caused by software or hardware, Nvidia may be forced to recall the current range of GTX 970 GPUs, so keep an eye out here for details if you happen to own one.

Since its launch back in September 2014, the GTX 970 has been absolutely flying off shelves, owed in part to its perfect balance between price and performance. A setback like this could be a big blow to Nvidia, so we’ll have to wait and see how it responds to this developing situation.

Är det någon som har problem med att utnyttja 4 gb på dessa korten?

Jag har i alla fall problemet. Om minnesanvändningen går över 3.5 GB så sjunker prestandan drastiskt.
