NAS

Hello! (sorry for english guys)

I have a hp 2000dx mt that I am going to give new life to by making it a NAS. I hope

Just wanted to ask, where in Sweden (Stockholm) can I pick up 2x2 Tb hard drives suitable to run in a raid? I just need this NAS to back up my photos/home movies/music/projects(websites, design projects etc) and hopefully to also be responsible for running a very limited home security setup.

Does the hp have enough grunt to run FreeNAS AND the home security, or do I forget reviving the old thing and bite the bullet for a new server setup.

I would like this to be a nice project I can sort of journal as a "just take your old pc and whoa-la!" thing if I can

Cheers
Royce

http://www.inet.se/ and http://www.webhallen.com/se-sv/ have stores in Stockholm. Dont know what drives you want but they should have something in stock.

System:\Dator\Spel>2600k¤4.5ghz_-_8Gb_-_670GTX_OC_-_Xonar_DX.exe

I'd say the machine can handle FreeNAS and some simple home security easily.

It's one of these right?

You'll need a sata controller card along with those drives, since the machine doesn't seem to support sata.

If you intend to run FreeNAS with ZFS as your file system of choice you should make sure you have a lot of RAM (would say 6GB as an absolute minimum, but more is to prefer). If you do not have a big enough amount of RAM you should go with UFS, which is more suitable for systems with limited resources.

As, from what I understand, there will not be that many people using your NAS, the hardware will most likely be enough for your needs.

Desktop: Intel C2Q Q9550 | 4GB RAM | Radeon 4850 | 120GB SSD | 3x500GB HDD
HTPC (Intel NUC): Intel i5-4250U | 8GB RAM | 250GB SSD
Laptop (HP 8460p): Intel i7-2620M | 8GB RAM | 14" 1600x900 | 120GB SSD |

Nice, thanks guys. I think this system can only handle 4 gigs of ram so I have to stick with that. I thought it had 2 SATA connectors, but I guess I have to double check that.

Can anyone recommend 2 2Tb drives that would be suitable and cheap? I dont need the write speeds to be amazing, it's mostly for storage of sentimental stuff.
