In the past here at the GamePC labs, we've looked at AMD's Opteron series for workstations and servers, and we've also looked at the pure Athlon64 for desktops. Somewhere in-between lies AMD's Athlon64 FX processor, the pesky little last minute add-in which was able to snag the performance crown away from Intel for single CPU operation. While we saw a ton of information on these processors released when AMD first launched the chips, we have not heard much from these chips since. Due to its high-clock speed and (likely) low yields, Athlon64 FX chips have been near impossible to get your hands on, and if you manage to find one, be ready to pay for it.
