AMD K7 core was using socket-462 and AthlonXP’s had 462pins. On the other hand Opteron uses Socket-940, meaning the CPU has 940pins. The reason why the core has so many pins is related to the integrated dual channel DDR-SDRAM memory controller, multiple processor architecture and 16-bit Hyper Transport links. The core size is the biggest among the AMD CPU’s ever. It is approximately twice the AMD Barton core and has 106million transistors. And these are mostly due to the existence of a L2 Cache with 1 MB size. Among with 64-bit command set, up-to-date ones like SSE2 are also supported by Opteron.
