If the headset doesn't work even on a completely separate machine, there may be a problem with the headset itself. Even if there is a problem though, I would guess it is firmware (as you initially suggested). I would try the following steps:
- If you haven't already, disable USB suspend. Go to Control Panel -> Power Options. "Change plan settings" on the setting you are using, and select "Advanced power settings". In the new menu, open "USB settings" -> "USB selective suspend setting", and make sure it is Disabled.
- Plug in the headset, then go to Start -> All Programs -> SteelSeries -> SteelSeries Engine -> SteelSeries Firmware Repair Tool. Select the Diablo Headset update.
- Uninstall the SteelSeries Engine completely (and choose NOT to save custom profiles). If you want to save the profile you had with the Diablo Mouse, before you uninstall, right click on the profile name and "Export" it.
- Go to the Device Manager, and go to the drivers that are not working properly (it looks like there are two of them - the SteelSeries Diablo III Headset, and the Unknown Device). Right click and uninstall the drivers. If there is a checkbox that says something like "Also delete drivers for this device", be sure to check that box too.
- Reconnect the headset, and let generic drivers load.
There is a chance you may have already tried this because you already tried many of the advanced troubleshooting tips I would have suggested in a situation like this. However, if you did not, it is worth trying. I'm going to be honest, driver problems do occur sometimes, but usually it is fixed by reinstalling or upgrading SSE. Please let me know if these steps do not work or if you encounter some other problem.
Still, I will do what I can to help you with the issue. This is a lot of reading, but I appreciate your patience and your effort to make this work.
