Hi guys,

I am just new here in Sweden from China. I have a boardband subscription with Tele2 250/50, and using wifi hub c2. I have some basic questions. It would be very helpful if someone can give me the answers.:)

1. After I change wifi hub c2 to bridge mode, I can get a "Public" IP address from Internet. When outside of my house, I can use this IP(or host if I have Domain name) to access my home network? Or I have to use FRP or ZeroTier?

2. How can I get my account info from Tele2, then I can fill those info(account name and password??) in my own router to get the access to Internet? Like PPoe? I cannot find in my subscription...

3. I planned to use a X86 router with openwrt, is there anyone else using this and having some experience?

Thank you very much!!

Next time, consider not asking similar questions in many different threads.

1. Yes. Tele2 gives you a public IPv4.

2. There is none. ISPs in Sweden generally don't use PPPoE as it simply serves no purpose and can needlessly decrease performance, especially on devices without hardware offloading for PPPoE. DHCP is all that is needed since the ISP knows what port in their equipment each of their customer is plugged into.

I heard some ISPs might start building PON networks (yuck!) instead of AON soon, so perhaps that will change. Hopefully not though.

3. I'm sure there are lots of people on this forum using OpenWrt, although most of them probably running it on reflashed consumer routers. I used to do that at home years ago, and I still do in the summer house and on a tiny mini router that I keep in my bag. It has served my well.

For people with x86 based routers (either on mini PCs or in a VM), running pfSense or OPNsense is probably more common. Then you have to deal with FreeBSD's subpar hardware support though. I personally run VyOS on an x86 mini PC, but VyOS is mainly targeted towards the enterprise market so it's CLI only and has a bit of a learning curve. OpenWrt is definitely easier to deal with for most people and generally really solid.

Thanks for your info. I am suprised that we can get a public IP address even from DHCP. So I can open some ports in my x86 router to access my home services from outside, right? I mean, if I associate a domain to this IP address like DDNS, I can access my home network via the domain. Are 80, 443, 8080 forbidden by Tele2?

I am using Proxmox VE in my X86 mini-PC, in which there are VMs like NAS, ubuntu, openwrt, and a Chinese AC system, then I can connect some APs to it.

PPPoE is legacy technology that normally isn't needed. Some ISPs still cling to it, but they really shouldn't. Like I said in a different reply, at most the ISP just needs to keep track of which port in their equipment each customer is connected to. It's actually quite common to just use DHCP like this to provide a public IP to customers without any additional information being required. It varies from country to country.

Yes, you just need to do standard port forwarding to be able reach your services from the internet (or simply add a firewall rule if Tele2 ever decides to provide IPv6 to its customers). As far as I know, they don't block any incoming ports. What they might block is outgoing port 25 to prevent compromised hosts from sending spam. I have a different ISP btw. but I don't know of any Swedish ISP blocking incoming ports.
