Tror inte det går på gmail.com, men om du använder Outlook mot Gmail IMAP så kan du ställa in att bara ta emot mail när du klickar på sync manuellt.

DNDEmail stops Gmail from showing new emails to you for set periods of time. For example, you can tell Gmail to show you emails at every hour, rather than as soon as they come in. It’s a “Do Not Disturb” sign for your inbox. And of course, you can whitelist important people like your boss, so you see their messages instantly.

Har inte svar på alla dina frågor men när du väljer att skapa nytt mail så har du några ikoner i överkant. Den ena gör att du kan fortsätta författa mailet i en modal-ruta med lite nedsläckt GUI bakom. Det kanske löser en viss del av distraktionen?

Jag har börjat med att automatiskt skicka lågprioriterade mail till en mapp kallad "semispam". Saker som nyhetsbrev och liknande åker dit istället för till inkorgen. Så mycket lättare att fokusera på mailen nu.

Annars kan du som @maximm säger och använda en annan klient för mailen. Mozilla Thunderbird är vad jag använder mot GMail och det har fungerat utmärkt såhär långt.
