VLC och ljud

I have an Inspiron 8100 too. With 0.4.6, I had the same errors than you,
and I had no sound with the /dev/dsp driver. It worked with the esd
plugin, I must say quite bad. Now with 0.5.0, it seems to work better
with the esd plugin ; try to install the vlc-plugin-esd package, and
choose it in the preferences.

Of course, I would like to know why it doesn't want to work with the OSS
driver as well

Because esd is hugging the dsp device. Try running killall esd befor
louching vlc with the oss module.
