Kan inte ändra xorg.conf, vad gör jag för fel?

Jag vill ändra xorg.conf för att kunna köra 1280x1024, men filen är ju skrivskyddad, och det finns ju inget root konto i Ubuntu. Hur gör jag för att fixa detta?

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Tack, har nu ändrat i filen, men jag kan fortfarande inte ändra till 1280x1024, nån som vet varför?

Jag med min magiska glaskula vet vad det är för fel, men jag tänker inte berätta det för dig förrens du visar de upplösningsrelaterade delarna ur din xorg.conf, och de eventuella felmeddelanden som finns i /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Felmedelanden fanns det rätt gott om i Xorg.O.log

Mitt råd är att testa med modelines istället. Se till att du har din skärms vertikala och horisontella frekvens spann och att den modeline du får ut från gtk är inom gränserna. Hur man använder modelines har jag beskrivit i en tråd som är länkad till i min signatur. Nu var det ett tag sedan jag skrev inlägget men det borde fortfarande gälla.

Jag var kanske lite otydlig, Horizsync anger man inte när man skapar modelinen (se dock länken i min signatur för när man använder den), men man ska se till att den modeline man får är inom skärmens specifikation. Vad som händer om man försöker skapa en modeline utan att ange vertikala frekvensen har jag ingen aning om, men det viktiga även här är att det är inom skärmens specifikationer. Ofta vill man väl ha så hög uppdateringsfrekvens som skärmen och grafikkortet tillåter.

om du menar att inte ange dessa siffror (horisontell och vertikal frekvens) i xorg.conf så vet jag inte vad som händer

Är detta bara med dvi-d? eller kan alla skärmar identifiera sig automatiskt? Om alla skärmar klarar det automatiskt så är det väl aldrig nödvändigt att ange horisontell och vertikal frekvens.
Har inte grub installerat för tillfället annats hade jag testat.

Alla skärmar kan inte identifiera sig automatiskt, men dessa skärmar är antagligen från tidig järnålder. De automatiska inställningarna verkar dock inte alltid funka helt perfekt. Min förra skärm funkade t.ex. korrekt i 1152x864 upplösning i 85Hz, 1024x768 ville den dock bara köra i 75Hz. Med nuvarande skärm kan jag inte få vissa upplösningar som den egentligen har stöd för, såvida jag inte anger korrekt modeline. Det verkar alltså vara lite si och så med de automagiska inställningarna ibland varför det kan vara bra att ange mer specifika inställningar. Så har i varje fall jag upplevt det.

Helt riktigt, men det är betydligt enklare än att direkt pilla på modelines - det kan ju bara helt automagiskt fungera

Vad har strömhantering med det hela att göra? Det är EDID som fixar automatiska inställningar.
