Medan DirectX idag är en vedertagen standard inom spelindustrin har AMD ett eget alternativ på gång – Mantle. Programmeringsgränssnittet (API) och tillhörande drivrutin ska framförallt ge bättre prestanda, men även underlätta vid utveckling av multiplattformstitlar för PC och den nya generationens spelkonsoler. Först ut med Mantle är Battlefield 4 med spelmotorn Frostbite 3, som även kommer användas av mer än 15 andra spel från Electronic Arts.

Medan spekulationerna går heta om att enbart titlar med spelmotorn Frostbite 3 kommer använda Mantle, går nu AMD ut med tre nya samarbetspartner. Nu ansluter sig Cloud Imperium Games med Star Citizen och spelmotorn Cryengine (4th gen.), Eidos Montreal med Thief och Unreal Engine 3, samt Oxide Games med Nitrous och en egenutvecklad spelmotor.

Mantle ska bland annat leverera nio gånger fler ritanrop per sekund än DirectX och minska overhead på CPU. Gränssnittet gör det även möjligt för programmerare att arbeta närmare hårdvaran och få direktåtkomst till grafikprocessorns funktioner med AMD:s arkitektur GCN, som används i Radeon HD 7000-serien och framåt. Därtill talar AMD om "perfekt parallellisering" med flera processorkärnor.

Vilka prestandaförbättringar Mantle kan väntas ge i förhållande till DirectX är fortfarande inte känt. Fler detaljer kommer dock avtäckas på utvecklarkonferensen APU13, där DICE kommer diskutera Battlefield 4 och rendering med Mantle.

Cloud Imperium Games is currently developing "Star Citizen," the highly anticipated, crowd-funded PC space simulator from legendary game designer Chris Roberts.
