I upgraded my GPU to this card from an XFX HD6870 1 gb. Ever since I did so two days ago I have had a lot of problems.
It started with blue screen of death occuring in Windows and I was unable to sort it out by updating GPU drivers, even if wiping the old with driver cleaner.
I decided I had to do a full reinstall of my OS, so I formatted my system partition and reinstalled Windows 7 all over on a clean and empty harddrive. When I had done so I never saw any blue screens, but instead my computer freezes up on different occasions:
1) When starting certain computer games, like Crysis 2 or Crysis 3, the whole computer freezes up immidiately. If there is sound on in the background, like web radio, it starts to loop fast creating a wierd buzzing-like noise. (exactly like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8erBOaOBck) The screen goes all black and I get a message that the DVI-connection is lost. I am unable to affect the system at all by pressing Alt + F4, Crtl + Alt + Dlt etc. Fans keep spinning in the case though. I am forced to do a hard restart by holding the power button.
2) When screen is shut down automatically, if I leave the computer for a certain amount of time, I am unable to wake it. Forced again to hard restart by holding power button since it is unresponsive.
3) When I shut down my computer, Windows will shut down as usual and the screen goes black but other than that the computer keeps running, with fans, lights and everyting on. Again, forced to shut down the computer the hard way by holding the power button.
What I tried so far to fix this:
- Reinstallation of Win 7 on clean drive
- Tried numerous different versions of Catalyst control center, including the latest stable 13.1 and beta 13.2, also the one that came on the CD with the card. Uninstalled old drivers + ran driver cleaner in between switches.
- Updated motherboard BIOS to latest version
- Instead of hooking the card up to the PSU via "6+2" I used the supplied Molex to 8-pin. Connected the 6-pin on one set of cables and the 8-pin on another set of cables (from same PSU).
Battlefield 3 runs without problems in 2560x1440 resolution with High/ultra graphic settings - no instability what so ever. I have also been running Furmark several times and it never crashed once.
I have been considering to update the GPU BIOS but I am a little hesitant to do so since I fear that I might completely screw things up if I try that...
Is there something wrong with my card or is this a software issue that can be resolved somehow? Compability issues with my other hardware? What should I do? Need help...
Best regards
