I attended the midnight launch of the Xbox, as I usually do with a new release. I like to test games and consoles early in the morning to ensure they're working and safe before my boys wake up. I can't quite put into words the dismay I felt when I turned it on and was greeted by a familiar red glow. Stricken with panic in the early hours of this morning, dreading the prospect of disappointing my children again, I myopically took the Xbox to a place I hadn't been to since a family tragedy some years ago - the pet cemetery.
I left the machine buried overnight with the intent to return later in the day with a functioning console, but when I awoke I was both startled and unnerved as my youngest son hugged and thanked me for bringing him an Xbox One on the day of its release. Bewildered but relieved, I brushed off the incident as nothing more than good fortune and some sort of logistics error, but as I examined the console the feeling of dread returned like a hammer blow to my stomach - there was soil lodged in the fan outlet.
With as much composure as I could assemble, I attempted to switch off the console and repack it to give myself some time to think, but as I reached for the button, my eyes met the Kinect sensor. An icy current crawled down my spine as my gaze was drawn deeper into the intense darkness of the lens. With a rush of determination I violently jabbed the off button, but a loud warning sound alerted me to the TV screen.
"Update in progress. Please do not unplug the console."
Reluctant to be defeated by a games console, I unplugged both it and the television and turned to leave to find the box, but as I got to the door the same sound resonated in my memory. I turned with relief to see the black screen, but my solace was short-lived as a dim light flickered in the corner, then slowly grew to fill the screen.
"Update in progress. Please do not unplug the console."
A surge of heat flooded my face as adrenaline pervaded my veins, and with seemingly no control over my body I found myself running from the house.
I returned several hours later, embarrassed and unwilling to believe the morning's events. Of course the pet cemetery was just a myth, how could it be anything but nonsense. Clearly the store didn't realise I was attending the midnight launch and sent me the console in the post. From outside my house I was comforted by the convivial sounds coming from within. My family was clearly enjoying the Xbox, so I consoled myself that my lack of sleep had simply caused me to be confused and paranoid. With this reassurance I headed inside to join in with the games, but upon entering I was disheartened to be met without a single welcome, or even so much as a glance in my direction. They became silent immediately, their eyes fixed on the screen, unblinking. Nobody seemed to hear my announcement, nor care as I shuffled unhappily out of the room. They were completely unaware of my presence.
I scurried to my bedroom with my tail between my legs, in the hope that I could sleep on it and awaken to a welcoming family, but I was instead roused by a deafening car horn. I had gone to sleep in my house and woken in the midst of traffic. Bemused and bleary eyed I attempted to grasp what was happening, but before I regained clarity a car had smashed into the back of mine. The driver came to my window, shouting all manner of insults at me but in my growing confusion and anger I ran straight past him and back to my house.
When I tried my key in the door, it wouldn't fit. After ringing the doorbell several times with no response I called the house phone, to no avail. I ran around the house to try to get anyone's attention through a window. The lights were off in every room. When I got to my bedroom window there seemed to be no activity, until I shone my torch through the glass. My wife was asleep in bed. As my eyes adjusted to the light, a strange dark shape became visible on the pillow next to her.
It was the Xbox One.
I had had enough of this madness. I picked up the nearest stone and hurled it through the window. As I climbed through the shattered frame every light in the house switched on at a blinding brightness and I was halted by an iron voice.
"Remain exactly where you are. The house is surrounded. You have breached the terms of our contract and have been classified as an enemy of the state. Make no movement until you are ordered. You may as well say goodbye to your family." When I tried to protest I felt a sharp pain in my spine followed by uncontrollable convulsions.
I awoke in a cell.
After hours of begging, I was able to make one phone call to my house in one last effort to connect with my family. Instead I was greeted by a monotonous voice that denied me any chance of speaking to my wife or children. It told me they were "occupied" and "unable to speak". When I demanded to know who I was speaking to, the phone went dead.
It is with great difficulty that I have published this message, but it is important that I make it known. This is a plea to anyone considering purchasing the Xbox One. It is not merely a gaming console. It is an insidious entity that could rob you of all you hold dear. You must avoid this machine at all cost.
