En gång i tiden var taiwanesiska VIA en stor tillverkare av styrkretsar. Modeller som KT133 och KT266 var mycket populära bland datoranvändare. Därefter hände något som gjorde att VIA inte längre kunde stå sig i konkurrensen.
I en intervju till hårdvarusajten Custom PC förklarar marknadschefen Richard Brown vad som egentligen hände. Enligt Brown insåg VIA tidigt att de inte har möjlighet konkurrera mot de stora tillverkarna. Intel har länge tillverkat egna styrkretsar, och när det stod klart att även AMD skulle göra detsamma var det dags för VIA att byta fokus.
One of the main reasons we originally moved into the x86 processor business was because we believed that ultimately the third party chipset market would disappear, and we would need to have the capability to provide a complete platform. That has indeed come to pass. Intel provides the vast majority of chipsets for its processors and, following its purchase of ATI, AMD is also moving very quickly in the same direction.
VIA kommer istället att fokusera på egna produkter, som processorn Nano och tillhörande styrkretsar. Huvudkonkurrenten inom området är processorjätten Intel, som med Atom har en slagkraftig plattform i samma marknadssegment. Brown kommenterar relationen till huvudkonkurrenten:
[...] VIA and Intel are direct competitors in a very tough market. Having said that, we do have a great deal of respect for Intel not just as a competitor but also for the huge contribution they have made in driving the development of the PC industry.
