"The Odin runs on Android. If that induces an internal groan, we get it. Android and gaming have a complicated history. But arguably Android makes the most sense for a device like the Odin. Not least because the hardware is comparable to that in a high end phone, but Android is also well catered for in the retro world, with most of the emulators having mature ports. Oh, and Android does have good games of its own, so you can play those natively too."
"It’s hard to fault the Ayn Odin for what it sets out to do. Android might not be the perfect ready-made gaming platform, but it’s allowed Ayn to build great hardware, step back, and give the user the responsibility of figuring out what to run on it. For a certain kind of person, this will make them very happy.
Streaming, traditional Android gaming, and emulation are all relatively niche use cases, of course, when compared to something like a Nintendo Switch Lite. That’s a $199 machine designed solely to play Nintendo Switch games, and if that’s what you’re after, it obviously does a much better job. The Odin won’t be for everyone.
But there’s something to be said for putting the flexibility of Android into a well-made, capable portable console and letting you do what you want with it. While Ayn doesn’t have its own games store to lean on, the Odin’s appeal is that it does for Android what the Steam Deck does for PC gaming — it brings the platform to a convenient form factor and says “hey, go check out what this thing can do.”"
Tech radar gav den maxbetyg:
"It is, essentially, an Android phone with a Switch-like shell built around it.
But that description does a disservice to an intelligently designed device with smart Android OS modifications that, with a little bit of tinkering and set up know-how, flourishes as a “do anything, play anything” handheld.
Whether you’re into native Android gaming, retro-focussed emulation or cloud gaming, the Ayn Odin handles it all with ease, in a comfortable form factor that makes long play sessions a dream. It’s hard not to fall in love with it."
Retrdodo gav den 9,5 av 10:
"The Odin handheld is a portable Android games console aimed at retro gamers who like to emulate consoles up to and including Playstation 2. It has powerful specs and superb build quality, making it one of the best “mid range” retro handhelds on the market."
