Corsair HS1 using 7.1 or 5.1 mode in gaming = broken?

Hello.

I recently purchased a Corsair HS1 headset and have been using it for like 2 weeks now, and its great except the loud sound and now a new issue Ive noticed!

The issue is:
When gaming and using 5.1 or 7.1 mode sounds from the left-ingame will appear in the right earcup, sounds from behind appear as if they are from the front, when I switch sides on the headset entirely meaning right earcup = left ear, it all starts to make sense, as the ingame-right comes in the right ear (left cup).

Seems to be a major issue in Bad Company 2, have also tried switching between Hi-Fi and Home Cinema in the game, also headphone but its all the same, and also in Counter Strike.

Sorry if it makes no sense, but it appears the headset or games believe rear=front/front=rear and left=right/right=left.

I just noticed, when I increase and decrease volume, the balance changes by +1 on the right, for example: 18/19 then back to 21/21, then 23/24.

Its annoying as hell.

Here is a picture of the "balance" problem:

I guess thats the cause of the problems with gaming, but im not entirely sure as I cant fix it.

V=Left

Have you adjusted the 7.1 VSS settings by any chance (SHIFTER in the software panel)? You can actually rotate the sound field using this option, so perhaps it has been shifted by mistake?

Presumably, you are using the multi-channel sound option in the game? You could also try with and without Dolby Headphone enabled to see if that helps?

Also try reinstalling the driver.

Those are at default, and no difference in games when trying with or without the 7.1 or dolby encoding enabled/disabled.

Still the balance issue persist.

You should certainly hear a difference with Dolby on and off. If reinstalling the driver (disable anti-virus for this) doesn't work, I'd suggest getting it replaced.

When using 7.1 and then enabling the Dolby 7.1 there is no difference at all with it on or off.
There is a difference when using 2.0 mode (stereo) with the 7.1 dolby, but it sounds wrong, cause its just emulating the stereo into 7.1.

Anyhow I just enabled Speakerfill for the HS1 under Windows own settings and now it sounds better.

Have you tried re-installing the driver? Are the lights on the volume control solid or flashing?

Yes.

They are Solid, in red while muted, in blue while not.

And Ive now started to notice a white-noise when no sounds are being played, and it disappears once I mute the entire system volume.

I'd suggest you contact your reseller and get it replaced, it doesn't sound right at all.

Might do.

I have now noticed a new issue, when I try to record games using Fraps, the sound is crackling, specially when something with bass effect is playing.
And its not even using the HS1 as input for the recording, its using the Stereo Mix/WhatUHear, so I dont see why it would be affected.

And back to the issue with left & right, I played Quake 2 from beginning to the end, and I had to alt-tab out and change the Volume Balance after pretty much each level, yet I havent even touched the volume control other than muting the entire system volume (some cutscenes cause major crackle)
The balance seem to auto-adjust itself +/- 1 on either left or right. So most of the sounds come from one of the cups.
And it randomly chooses to swap left and right completely so that sounds from left appear in the right cup.

What solves it is to alt-tab out and go to windows own settings for output and re-adjust the Balance back to to like 20&20 instead of 20&19. And change from stereo to 7.1 and back to stereo. Its a major hassle and in some games you cant alt-tab.

Seems like the balance issue is gone, cause they now appear to be at the correct volume level.

But its just a shame that the headset and the system volume are dependant on eachother, would have been much better if they were independent of eachother! Then your head wouldnt explode in intros for games unless system volume is on the lowest. If they were independent you could have system volume at its highest along with winamp, windows mediap layer, vlc, steam, system sounds etcetera, but the headset adjusted as you see fit.

Though, sound still crackle while recording using Fraps. The crackle does not appear in the videos, only while actually recording.
