Problem OfficeConnect Cable/DSL Wireless Router - Can Not send or receive mail
Fact OfficeConnect Cable/DSL Wireless Router
Fact Can Not send or receive mail
Fact Can Not send email
Fact Outlook Express
Fact Microsoft Outlook
Fact 3CRWER100-75
Fact 3CRWER200-75
Fact MTU
Cause SMTP or POP server at the ISP are behind NAT and are not passing correctly the MTU settings back to the router. (Maximum Transition Unit).
Fix
The best value for MTU is that value just before your packets get fragmented.
How to find the MTU out:
1) In an MSDOS command prompt, type:
ping -f -l 1472 Server_Name where Server_Name is the SMTP or POP3 server name at your Internet Provider. (PING -F -L 1472 ....... in lower case). Press Enter.
2) Then reduce 1472 by 10 until you no longer get the "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set" error message.
3) Then increase by 1 until you are 1 less from getting "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set" message again.
4) Add 28+8=36 more to this (since you specified ping packet size, not including IP/ICMP header of 28 bytes and PPoE of 8 bytes. If you' re not using a DSL connection, add only 28) And this is your maximum MTU.
For any reason, Do not set an MTU size smaller than 1,400
Fix
How to change your MTU to the Maximum MTU found earlier
1. All of the OfficeConnect Firewalls are compliant to the RFC 894. So, they do not have the MTU size change field.
2. To change the MTU size to the value found in the previous stage on your computer, you can use a tool called Dr TCP: http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp or MTU Changer: http://www.cafes.net/downloads.html
3. Also, you could manually set the MTU size on the computer: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q2831...
