If you have an unlockable specimen, it's quite straightforward to unlock the extra cores from BIOS. You must have a motherboard with a chipset and BIOS-version that supports core unlocking and you must be lucky with the processor. Phenom II x2 are in reality Phenom II x4 processors with two cores locked. In some cases the cores are locked because one or both of them are faulty, but sometimes there is a demand of x2's and a surplus of x4's so they lock two cores on a fully functional x4. As you see, there is a lot of luck involved and you may or may not unlock one or both of the cores. (and you see why many opt to shell out a few extra $ to get a Phenom x4 955 directly instead)

For guides on how to unlock on your motherboard specifically, it's easiest to google your motherboard name and "unlock cores" or just "Phenom II unlock cores"

If I decide to go with the phenom II x2 and attempt to unlock it do I need to buy a seperate cooling unit for it? I have been trying to understand more about this chip and its potential, but it seems that I can find a straight answer to this question

The stockcooler will work if you unlock it but it's noisy and ugly, use that for now and for 249SEK a popular cooler is this one; http://www.inet.se/artikel/5321604/cooler-master-hyper-212-pl...

Just wait a month or two then buy that aswell, fairly easy to install too;)

Well that does it I think. You have all been the best of the best. I am so thankful for your help as it has forced me to relearn all of this shit again and I feel so much more comfortable in my choices.

Yes, I caved and went for the gtx 460. Can any of you swedes assure me once more that Fractal Design makes good PSU's?

Oh and I am getting the mobo and the cpu from JMEDATA as Inet.se has them out of stock. I am going to just call the store in malmo and see if I can go pick it up. I really wish pixmania was good as their phenom is 100kr less. Damn

There is nothing wrong with Fractal Designs PSU's. Just stay away from Ace's PSU products.

Fractals PSU:s are based on FSP design as I recall.. Pretty basic, but well working units!

Good choice on the GPU, if you do a fair bit of gaming. Hopefully you succeed unlocking a core or two aswell, and then you've certainly got a nice machine for very decent money

But what about the dangers of unlocking the other 2 cores? I have been told on another website that there is a danger of frying your mobo and cpu with the overclocking of the phenom. For someone who has only ever bought computers before it is a little...terrifying thinking that i could just flip a switch, have 2 unlocked cores, and then come out one morning to a smoldering and smoking pc tower.

That is not really a possibility unless you touch the vcore voltage, which may not be necessary. I'm not so familiar with the Phenom 2 processors, but my brother has an x3 which he unlocked to an x4.

As someone already mentioned, there is virtually no danger of frying CPU or motherboard when you are unlocking the cores. The only way to possibly harm the CPU/motherboard is if you increase the voltages too high while having inadequate cooling and then load the CPU heavily.
Since you are not going to touch the voltage at all, there is no problem.

If you plan on overclocking the CPU at a later time you can buy a cooler better suited to take care of the extra heat at that time.

I would go with the Phenom too be honest. The lack of L3 cache in the Athlon II just makes the cores waay to slughish for gaming.
And future proofing is a silly argument as most games still only use 2 cores. Youre better of getting a proper quad later on, next time you upgrade.

Obviously more and more games are gonna add 4 core support in the future. But they should still run fine on a dual core. And you cant really expect allot considering you will be running on a 5770.

You probably already know it but note that the front panel USB-connectors on the chassi are only USB 2.0 (don't think there are any cheap chassis with 3.0 yet.)

Just so you don't end up disappointed since USB 3.0 was one of your requirements.
