Mixing Type 3 and Type 4 on the same (old) corsair RM 750

Hi,

I recently bought a used ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3090 24GB OC that I am yet to connect to the PC as I need an extra pcie cable. I have the corsair RM750 (part no.CP-9020055).

Apparently, there are two version of RM 750 and I have the older one (2014). A few days ago, I ordered a Corsair Individually Sleeved PCIe Cable Single / Type 4 - Svart before I knew of the existence of the two versions.

However, Type 4 and Type 3 pcie is supposed to be compatible according to this webpage:

https://www.corsair.com/us/en/explorer/diy-builder/power-supp...

Currently, I have an RTX 2070 Super connected to a single daisy-chain pcie cable( Type 3 I believe).

Now, what I am unsure of is if it is actually safe to have both Type 3 and Type 4 cable on the same PSU or if it would cause issues to the GPU in some way since we are connecting two different cable types.

Or should I just order another Type 3 cable from corsair just to be safe? I don't want to fry the GPU or the mobo as it is out of warranty!

See Corsair's compatibility table:

Citat:

The only difference between Type 3 and Type 4 cables is the pinout of the 24-pin ATX cable; all other cables (SATA, PCIe, etc) are the same.

Thanks, it mentions they are comptaible but it does not say if you can mix both at the same time especially that I am using the older pre-2019 PSU.

It doesn't say compatible, it says they are the same. There might be some superficial differences between them, but electrically they're identical.

i can recommend swapping PSUs, 750w is not enough for a rog strix 3090. i tried with a seasonic 750W PSU and it kept shutting down during load even at 80% power limit.

My rog strix 3090 draws 480w under load if its ran at 120% powerlimit.

Some Seasonic PSUs had a known issue with the GeForce 3000-series due to a noisy 12V sense line that caused them to trip, so it might have been that issue rather than that 750W isn't enough.

480W! I better be upgrading soon.

Thanks for this!

Just to understand how it works, I believe my older PSU is listed on the legacy page of the compatibility list (https://www.corsair.com/us/en/s/legacy-psu-cable-compatibilit...). The dots under the RM column mean that the PSU should be compatible with both type 3 and 4 - which means they both can be connected at the same time to power the GPU.

Yes, you'll notice that all PSUs are either compatible with both Type 3 and 4 PCIe or neither of them. If mixing the cables would be an issue there'd be a big warning about it.
