Chiptillverkaren tillkännagav planer på att sparka cirka 15 000 anställda, eliminera sin utdelning för fjärde kvartalet och minska investeringarna.

Intel-aktierna sjönk så mycket som 17% i utökad handel på torsdag efter att chiptillverkaren sa att den skulle sparka över 15% av sina anställda som en del av en kostnadsminskningsplan på 10 miljarder dollar och rapporterade svagare resultat än analytiker hade förutspått.

Varning till alla som funderar på att köpa nya Windows AI laptops med ARM/Qualcomm Snapdragon X. SdX saknar en viktig funktion som Intel och AMD haft sedan 2013 resp 2015, AVX2 som används av moderna spel och tyngre 3D program. Det finns långa listor med spel som aldrig kommer att fungera. Apples byte från x86 till ARM har haft samma problem.

AMD är 100% kompatibla och ungefär lika batterieffektiva, de nyare modellerna har även AVX512, alltså 2 generationer och 10 år före Snapdragon X som är kvar i 2015.

Compared to the NEON units on Oryon, the x86 vector instruction set is both wider (256b versus 128b) and the instructions themselves don’t perfectly overlap. As Qualcomm puts it, AVX to NEON translation is a difficult task. Still, we know it can be done – Apple quietly added AVX2 support to their Game Porting Toolkit 2 this week – so it will be interesting to see what happens here in future generations of Oryon CPU cores. Unlike Apple’s ecosystem, x86 isn’t going away in the Windows ecosystem, so the need to translate AVX2 (and eventually AVX-512 and AVX10!) will never go away either."
