Fan noise in HX 850, beeping in HX 620

I have had an HX 850 for a couple of months now, and recently transferred it from an Antec P182 (where it was fully enclosed in the bottom compartment) to a Silverstone FT02 (where it draws air in through the back of the case and exhausts it through the top).

After this transfer, the PSU is suddenly the loudest component in my system by far. It clearly drowns out the sound of 3x 180mm fans @ 700 rpm, 2x 120mm @ 900 rpm and 1x 140mm @ 800 rpm. The PSU fan seems to be running at pretty high speeds, and exhibits a certain fast clicking noise. The idle power draw from the wall socket is roughly 160 watts so I wouldn't expect the fan to need to ramp up much.

I am a bit uncertain if the suddenly increased perceived noise is due to the PSU fan being directly exposed to the outside, or what.

I also have an HX 620 that is just over 2 years old, that has a very high-pitched rhytmic whine to it. This particular PSU was bought from a foreign dealer that is now bankrupt, so I cannot return it through normal (Norwegian) channels.

How does Corsair feel about these two? Is the perceived fan noise from the HX 850 likely to be worth an RMA? Can the HX 620 be taken care of somehow?

Many thanks in advance!

At idle, and even up to around 50% load, the HX850 should still be quiet, with the fan spinning well below maximum, so if the fan is spun-up at idle then it suggests that the PSU is hot. This could be an issue with how it's installed - perhaps starved of airflow, or maybe the fan guard is being compressed against the case and restricting the fan's movement?

For the HX620, does the whine occur all the time, or when running 3D games? Some graphics cards can cause this to happen. If the reseller is now defunct then you can RMA via the Corsair website, if you choose to do so.

Coil whine

I got a modest case of coil whine on a 520HX when I upgraded my Radeon 2900 Pro to a Radeon 5850. Possibly because it dramatically changed the power draw (2900 = 70W idle; 5850 = 20W idle). I can hear it slightly when the computer is idle and I move the mouse or when the computer is otherwise idle and subject to heavy disk access. I.e. around 105W total (measured using a kill-a-watt). CPU or GPU load that cause the power draw to increase beyond 120W or so will remove the whine. The official Corsair forum once suggested disabling Speedstep (to increase power draw and presumably change the noise profile) if I recall correctly. Not an ideal option. The other option was RMA.

Is coil whine, particularly when it isn't terribly noticeable, a valid reason for RMA? And who is going to foot the bill for shipping (to Holland?)? I assume that the reseller in this case has pretty much no interest in helping out. PSU is three years old. Warranty is five years for the HX series, right?

If the change of graphics card caused the coil whine to start then culprit is likely the card, and possibly feedback from its VRMs. Some say that turning on Vsync helps, as it limits the frame rate to the monitor's refresh rate (high fps or swings or fps can cause this).

HX520 pre-dated many of these graphics cards, and in later PSU models we implemented measures to reduce / eliminate it, but really it's typically the power section on the graphics side that's the culprit. You could RMA the HX520, but there's no gurantee another HX520 wouldn't have the same issue with your card.

I'd certainly contact TechSupport on Corsair.com and see what they can do for you though.
