Beginning with version 2.3, a special installation switch was added to the Intel® Application Accelerator. This switch can assist in troubleshooting issues such as devices disappearing from Windows* Explorer* and/or My Computer*. Some customers have also reported that this has helped resolve blue screen errors.
This installation switch modifies the installation parameters in order to help identify why certain devices may disappear from your system after installing the Intel Application Accelerator. This switch is similar to running in "Safe Mode" (built into Windows*). Using this installation switch will cause all the devices currently installed in your system to run at a standard PIO transfer mode rather than at their optimal transfer mode. Having the devices run at a standard PIO transfer mode may resolve issues such as devices disappearing.
Note: Please be aware that when operating in PIO mode, your system may operate more slowly than before. It may also take longer to boot up. This is only temporary and it can easily be corrected by changing the transfer modes later to a higher setting (described in Step #2 below).
Step 1 - Installing Switch
In order to install the Intel Application Accelerator using this particular installation switch, please complete the following steps:
If you haven't done so already or if it has been removed from your system, download version 2.3 of the Intel Application Accelerator.
Once the Intel Application Accelerator has been successfully downloaded, go to Start>Run and type the command line below for the appropriate language (without the quotation marks):
English:
"C:\Download_Location\iaa23_enu.exe -A -PIO_ALL"
Multi-language:
"C:\Download_Location\iaa23_multi.exe -A -PIO_ALL"
Reboot the system when prompted.
This will install the Intel Application Accelerator and at the same time will configure any devices attached to the chipset's controller to a lower PIO transfer mode.
Step 2
If this corrects the issues you were previously experiencing, it's a good indication that one of the devices currently installed in your system is not fully capable of running at its optimal transfer mode and we recommend completing the following steps.
Use the Intel Application Accelerator diagnostic utility to increase the transfer modes for each of the devices, one setting at a time. (Increasing the transfer modes involves changing from PIO-modes towards the faster UDMA-modes). This should be done one device at a time and we recommend beginning with the Primary Hard Drive. Additional information on transfer modes and their associated speeds can be found on page 31 of the Intel Application Accelerator's User's Manual.
Beginning with the Primary Hard Drive, raise the transfer mode one setting at a time until you have reached the maximum setting supported by each device.
Once you have reached the maximum setting, proceed on to the next device. It is important to test the system each time in order to verify if increasing each device's transfer mode will reproduce the issues.
Please contact the device manufacturer for information on which transfer modes their devices support and reasons why a device may behave differently at faster transfer modes
