Det har även hänt bland kylare på grafikkort senaste tiden, då personer försökt montera bättre kylare. ATi tänkte nog på detta när de designade Radeon 9700 Pro, det finns nämligen en sorts "shim" på kärnan som skyddar den mot att man mosar kanter o dylikt. FrostyTech har skrivit en intressant artikel i ämnet. De har kommit fram till att eftersom shimmen sitter ivägen är det svårt att få bra kontakt med kärnan ifall man byter kylare. Men de har dock en lösning på problemet som de presenterar i artikeln.
With the area around the R300's silicon core populated by ultra small capacitors and resistors, the manufacturer has placed something there for protection. That protection comes in the form of a 4mm wide band of copper which runs around the perimeter of the 40mm square package. It helps to prevent the tiny components from getting crushed, or the core from being chipped.
